Musée Juliobona

The Gallo-Roman Museum of Lillebonne gives us a glimpse of the old Roman town, known as Juliobona. In Caesar’s day, it was capital comparable to Nîmes or Arles, as demonstrated by the impressive remains of the theatre. Juliobona was ideally situated on the road to Rouen and Paris, as well as overlooking the Seine, whose estuary was much wider at the time and allowed the town to trade with places as far away as Britain. Excavations over several decades have revealed more and more indications of the town’s importance, and which are today shown in the museum. As well as seeing the artefacts, visitors can also wander through the Gallo-Roman amphitheatre, where you will find yourself immersed in the daily life of the Calètes (the name of the tribe that inhabited the Pays de Caux). Special events are also organised throughout the year at the museum (lectures spectacles, art workshops, track and field games, etc.).
